Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and gather your ingredients.
  2. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  4. Carefully fold in the cooled caramelized onions and half of the shredded Gruyère cheese into the meat mixture.
  5. Shape the mixture into a loaf, about 8 inches long, and place it in a greased baking dish.
  6. Bake the meatloaf for about 1 hour. Use a meat thermometer to check that it reaches 160°F (70°C).
  7. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese over the top and return to the oven for 5-10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  8. Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve.
