Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and gather your ingredients.
- In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Carefully fold in the cooled caramelized onions and half of the shredded Gruyère cheese into the meat mixture.
- Shape the mixture into a loaf, about 8 inches long, and place it in a greased baking dish.
- Bake the meatloaf for about 1 hour. Use a meat thermometer to check that it reaches 160°F (70°C).
- Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese over the top and return to the oven for 5-10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
- Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve.

Notes
Use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatloaf is perfectly cooked. Let it rest to maintain moisture and improve slicing quality.
